Study Defines Elements of Restorative Landscapes

Correlation between "perceived restorative potential", personal preference determined

Researchers investigated the relationship between Perceived Restorative Potential (PRP) and "preference" for an environment with respect to restorative components in two landscape categories: urban built landscapes and urban natural landscapes. The study found a moderate correlation between PRP and preference between urban built and urban natural landscapes and defined two constructs (preference and PRP) that can be used as a guide in designing and planning restorative landscapes.

Agricultural Educators, Organic Growers Benefit from Training Program

Nutrient management challenges identified, addressed using train-the-trainer model

An intensive training program for agricultural educators was designed to study challenges related to nutrient management for organic growers. Educational workshops, presentations, and farm visits reached 714 growers, and related publications reached more than 2575 people. Survey respondents' ability to help organic growers with nutrient management increased after the sessions, and growers' knowledge of using organic nutrient sources improved as a result of workshops and classes.

Cut flowers fare better after quick transport, despite exposure to higher temperatures

"For Imported Flowers, Getting There Faster is Better" - The cut rose cultivar ‘Pink Engagement’ lasted longer when transported for only 24 hours compared to a 7-day transport. - Photo courtesy of Ria LeonardA study examined three transport systems used to bring cut flowers from Bogota, Colombia, to the United States. The results showed that, when using fresh non-stored flowers, the rapid transport systems resulted in equal or longer vase life than the 7-day transport system in the majority of shipments for each flower species, even when the flowers were subjected to short periods of higher or fluctuating temperatures.

Biocontainers on the Horizon for Holiday Floral Favorite

Biodegradable, compostable containers show promise, add value to poinsettia crops

Researchers evaluated biodegradable, compostable, and traditional plastic containers for use in the production of poinsettias. Plastic, rice hull, wheat starch-derived bioresin, and molded fiber containers received the highest ratings. When adjusted for container height, final plant height was greatest in molded fiber containers and lowest in wheat starch containers. Plant quality was not negatively impacted by any of the seven containers, though the study noted that marketability could be affected by container integrity.

High Tunnel, Open Fields Compared for Cold Weather Raspberry Production

Tunnel environment found to extend harvest, promote yield, reduce disease incidence

To compare primocane-fruiting and floricane-fruiting cultivars of red raspberry, trials were conducted in high tunnel and open field environments in Michigan. Results showed that characteristics such as harvest season, yield, and berry quality were similar in the field and tunnels, but the tunnel environment tended to increase plant vigor, yield, and fruit quality and suppress several diseases. The most productive cultivars in both environments were 'Nova' and 'Canby' (floricane) and 'Caroline' and 'Heritage' (primocane).

Mechanical application of recycled newsprint slurry provides effective weed control for apple trees

Experiments were conducted to investigate the use of spray-on-mulch slurry comprised primarily of recycled waste newsprint fiber as an effective method to control excessive weed competition and enhance tree establishment and performance. A study reported on a new technology that provides mechanical application of waste newsprint product to new or established orchards.
